PLAY-WRITING COMPETITION
RESULTS ANNOUNCED BY DRAMA LEAGUE
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 10. Results of the one-act play-writing competition sponsored throughout New Zealand by the British Drama League are:
Open Section (31 entries)—Miss S. Thomson, Dunedin (“Experimental House”) 1; Miss Alice H. Kenney, Auckland (“After the Fact”), 2; Mrs M. V. Humphries, Nelson (“Quiet, Please”) 3. The judge was Mr O. N. Gillespie, of Wellington. New Zealand Section (24 entries) — Bruce Mason, Wellington (“The Evening Paper”), 1; Mrs M. Bullock, Wellin on ("An Evening’s Pleasure”) 2; Mrs K. Healey, Dunedin (“The End of the Story”) 3. The judge was Mr A. R. Dunlop, of Invercargill. Religious Section (13 entries)—Mrs Alison Drummond, Hamilton (“A Tree by the Waterside”), 1; Mrs Allona Priestley, Malaya (“Nativity 1950”), 2; Mrs K. Healey, Dunedin (“The Cross”), 3. The judge was Mrs Martin Sullivan, of Christchurph. This is the first time a contest for this section has been conducted in New Zealand. Junior Section, under 19 (three entries)—Frank Newman, Christchurch, 1; Marjory Forrester, Marton, 2. Results of Drama Festival
Last year’s winner, the Wellington Workers’ Educational Association Drama Group, has again won through to the New Zealand finals of the British Drama League’s festival of oneact plays. The judge (Miss Frances Mackenzie, of London) awarded first place to this group’s presentation of Noel Coward’s “Still Life,” after seeing the divisional finals for this part of the North Island last evening. Second in the divisional finhls was the Hawera Repertory Society, which performed ‘‘The Roll of the Drum,” by Cyril Roberts. Norman Holland’s “Dimitrios.” presented by the Pukehou Players, Hawke’s Bay, was placed third.
