TEST OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS
BRIDGE OF REMEMBRANCE INTERSECTION
A half-hour trial yesterday morning of the newly-installed traffic lights at the intersection of Cashel street, Oxford terrace, and Durham street was entirely satisfactory. When the lights began to operate, traffic moved hesitantly, most motorists being unaware of the lights until their attention was drawn to them by Mr H. S. Southern (district engineer for the City Council), who first threw the switch in the riverside control box, and twp traffic inspectors. Later traffic moved very smoothly. The order of the lights is:—Cashel street, Durham street, Oxford terrace. Right-hand turns were made easily by the trial motorists. Only small adjustments in the placing of the standards containing lights were necessary to give motorists the fullest view of the lights. The installation Will probably not be brought into permanent use until after next Wednesday at the earliest. The vehicle-actuated rubber pads have been installed, and have yet to be connected to the controls. Work will begin this morning on the building of two safety zones on toe northern line of the intersection. One will be toe island separating traffic from the north in Oxford terrace proposing to turn left into Cashel street
The authorised pedestrian crossing of Cashel street,' at present opposite Turnbull and Jones’s shop. J will be changed, and will run to outside the Zetland Hotel.x Markings have also to be placed on the roadways to indicate approach limits for vehicles.
