NATIONAL HEALTH INSTITUTE
OPENING CEREMONY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 2. It was sound policy in a country spending £15,000.000 on hospital service, £3.000.009 on medical service, and £3,000,000 on drugs to spend a little money on preventive service, said the Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Marshall) today, speaking at the opening ceremony of fhe National Health Institute at Wellington. The opening of the institute was a landmark in the programme toward a healthy nation, and was a significant advance in health facilities, he said. The institute would investigate the cause and spread of disease, and condust research into means of combating them. It would also undertake the training of health officers and district nurses, as well as carry out routine work such as the preparation of vaccine and the identification of bacteria. The medical statistics branch, already established, vtould be a section of the institute.
Mr Marshall paid a tribute to a former Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, who had first urged the establishment of such an institute.
