T.E.A.L. TRIPS TO TOKYO

CHARTER TO QANTAS ENDS NEXT MONTH

The Weekly journeys from Sydney to Tokyo of a T.E.A.L. DC-6 plane, under charter to Qantas Empire Airways, will end in October, according to Tasman Airways’ general manager (Mr G. N. Roberts), who visited Christchurch yesterday.

The charter has been operating since July 7, and has given T.E.A.L. crews valuable experience over a new and longer route, as well as a pleasant week’s swimming and sightseeing in the Japanese summer. The company has ' also obtained welcome extra revenue for the winter “off season.” The DC-6 flies to Tokyo by way of Darwin, Manila, and Iwakuni. The airliner arrives in Tokyo each Thursday night, and the crew does, not leave again until the Friday of the next week. Aircrews are billeted at one of the leading hotels and spend their time sightseeing, swimming, and rowing.

Shade temperatures in Tokyo lately have been as high as 95 degrees. By Saturday, the aircraft is back in Sydney, and on Sunday it is in New Zealand.
