MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. September 2. A railway surfaceman, William Henry Marriott, of Pohokura, was committed for trial in the Supreme Court on a charge of manslaughter, after the police case against him had been heard in the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford today. It was alleged that on June 26, on the railway between Whangamomona and Pohokura, he unlawfully used a motor jigger at a time when he was not authorised to do so, and killed Hori Jack Herangi, aged 26, machine operator, of Pohokura. The jigger was travelling from Whangamomona to Pohokura, and, west of the Whangamomona tunnel, was struck by an east-bound raided .goods train which was due at Whangamomona at 7.30 p.m.
