PIANO RECITAL
OLIVE BLOOM PLAYS IN COLLEGE HALL
Yesterday’s lunch-time recital in the Canterbury College Hall was given by an English pianist, Olive Bloom. The §rogramme comprised Scarlatti’s onata in C major, Haydn’s Variations in F minor, Brahms’s Rhapsody ih B minor, Debussy’s “Reflets dans I’Eau,” Ravel’s “Jeux STSaux,” and two preludes by Rachmaninoff. One would wish to hear more often pianists of this genre, to whom the technical aspects of piano playing are merely the means to an end. Throughout her performance, Miss Bloom exercises a self-discipline and control that made her playing more a matter of the mind than of the fingers. One might liken her to a first-class craftsman, who directs his tools and his knowledge with a single purpose—to build something beautiful. In her recital, Miss Bloom proved herself to be a genuine craftsman of music, and at the same time revealed herself as a person with taste and charm. —P.G.Z.
