Sets of Bowls for Lepers
When the islands steamer Matua sailed from Lyttelton recently site took 134 cases of useful gifts for the lepers on Makogai. Included in the cases- tor the first time were 15 sets of outdoor bowls given by a Christchurch business firm. Most outdoor games are played on Makogai, but this is The first opportunity the patients will have to play bowls. Mr P. J. Twomey, secretary of the Lepers* Trust Board, said that the dispatching of gifts to leprosy sufferers was only one of the board's activities. Films from New Zealand were screened to 7QP patients at Makogai twice a week in an open-air cinema provided by the board. .The films ■helped the patients to forget their suffering and provided the mental relaxation necessary to their recovery.
