SCHOOL RUGBY

Sir,—Mr E. R. Webb, in his recol- ( lections of 1884, referred to the late J. P. C.M.G., sports master , Wellington College. Ten years later, , as headmaster, he was prominent at i the match, Wellington College v. Wanganui Collegiate School, played on the Petone Show Grounds. After years of losses, Wellington won by 30 points to 11, with a Holyoake in the- team. Mr Firth ran up and down the line encouraging his side to “Get possession!” Besides Christ’s College and Wellington, I am fairly certain that Nelson College participated in these games 60 years ago and I do not quite follow your report that this quadrangular tournament commenced in 1925. The Collegiate School records indicate that in the late 80’s St. Patrick’s- College (now at Silverstream) could not be induced to participate in these annual matches. The owner of Brancepeth Station was Mr Hugh Beetham (not Beecham).—Yours, etc., * W. H. WARREN. Timaru, August 29.
