HAYWARD TO APPEAL
DECLARATION AS PROFESSIONAL DECISION AGAINST SOUTH AFRICAN RUNNER (New Zealand Press Association) ■ (Rec. 8 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 21. Wally Hayward, aged 46, holder of all the world running records for 50 miles and over, will appeal against the decision to declare him a professional. He was declared a professional by the South African Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association as a result of his visit to England last year,, when he shattered three major long-distance records. Mr J. D. Vorster, chairman of Hayward’s former club in the Transvaal, said today that the club would support Hayward’s appeal. He Mid that Hayward accepted 100 guineas expenses from the South African Olympic and Empire Games Association in good faith. “As that association is a strictly amateur one, it set his mind at rest,” he said.
