WEIGHTS IN MAIN FLAT RACES

Conference Approves C.J.C. Remit (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 16. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Racing Conference today supported a remit from the Canterbury Jockey Club dealing with minimum weights in principal flat races. The remit provides that the minimum weight for such races from September 1 to April 30 shall not be less than 7-7. Mr G. H. Grigg said that the existing rule made it compulsory for the two main flat races at a meeting to have a 7-0 minimum. The Canterbury Jockey Club's remit made it optional, giving a club the right to have a 7-7 minimum if it wished for all races at its meeting. A lot of horses were being ridden overweight these days, Mr Grigg said. Mr D. W. J. Gould said that the remit enabled clubs wanting to use the higher minimum to do so. It also allowed the major clubs to provide the 7-0 minimum and keep down the weight of the good horses.
