IMPORTED ANIMALS AND REPTILES
Sir,—There are scores of zoos in the world. In common with all zoos the two in New Zealand contain many species of potential man-killers. No alarm is ever expressed over their presence, or in the periodic visits of circuses containing similar animals. Parents take their children to see the strange beasties! Crocodiles, through being cold-blooded, are very susceptible to temperature variations. Should our local reptiles escape at this time they would quickly perish, and even in much warmer conditions, soon become immobilised so that a baby would be safe with them. It is interesting to note that “man-eat-ing” crocodiles have made agreeable pets on a number of occasions. And of course at Karachi, India, a score or m6re in the Mugger Pit are attended by a staff of Hindu priests who walk among them and even feed them by hand!—Yours, etc., R. V. FRANCIS SMITH.
