COST OF LIVING
Sir, —I have just read two letters complaining about high living costs; but I do not remember reading any complaints about the high standard of living; apparently that is satisfactory. Perhaps some cost of livin'* experts can suggest how a high standard of living can be secured and maintained with high wages but without high costs of goods and services, not by the trick of something for nothing at the taxpayers’ expense, called cost v of living subsidy. Some constructive criticism to help hold the good things we have would be more useful. The critics should remember .that New Zealand is a producer of primary products, and that over 90 per cent, of the present standard of living is derived from this source.• New Zealand is entering a free, world competition market, in which a price recession can easily happen. What then?—Yours, etc.. 60 WEARS A WORKER. Rakaia, July 15, 1954.
