RADIO PROGRAMMES

Sir, —No doubt criticism is easy, but the poor radio programmes go on and on. They cater very well for- the serial and quizz fans, and, of course, the highbrows, but I am sure a large section of the people are, like myself, middlebrow. When living in Wellington we were able to get the YD stations, which do put on a varied programme; but from Christchurch we seem only to get the YA, ZB and YC networks. Surely it could be arranged that at least one station put bn a light, varied programme, especially in the evenings. In our family we find that we may as well switch off the wireless until about 10 pm.; otherwise, a fair sample would be 3YA, a talk on farming; 3ZB, crime serial; 3YC, a dreary sonata. The only solution seems to be to invest in an all-wave set and see what Australia can do.—Yours, etc., DISGRUNTLED. July 16, 1954;
