RELATIONS WITH UNITED STATES
Sir, —I have come to the conclusion that “P.J.A.” must be just out of the schoolroom; otherwise he would know that American “war behaviour” in 1942 saved us Irom becoming a Japanese base. We have much to thank America for, and I am sure most New Zealanders would feel more secure if an American base were established here. As “P.J.A.” grows older and
acquires more judgment, he will remember with shame the letters he has written to this paper. Let us hope, for our sake, he will not learn it the hard way—in a Russian labour camp —for as sure as I write this, if Britain and America do not employ deeds instead of so many words, we shall have a Communist base in our country, because Russia is following in Hitler’s footsteps, but in a more subtle way.— Yours, etc., June 15, 1954. Sir, —“P.J.A.” is at his foolish complaints again. He takes exception to the visit of friendly American bombers to New Zealand. He should be down on his knees thanking God that American bombers and ships of the American fleet were at hand to defeat the Japanese, in the Coral Sea a few years ago; otherwise, he might have been pulling a rickshaw for his Japanese masters, instead of having a job in a country where everyone has real freedom and those over 21 years of age a vote to elect their choice in the government of the country.—Yours, etc., Y.T. June 15, 1954.
