ELEVATED RAILWAY, ETC.
Sir,—i wish to thank Mr W. B. Gates for his approval of my suggesthat L. C. Walker be asked to address public meetings on his scheme for dredging the estuary, our rivers, ana swampy areas in Canterbury, as well as railway improvements. I have known Mr Walker many years and respect his ability to conceive and explain valuable schemes for the benefit of the community. This scheme should appeal to all and sundry. It is a time when we should all sink our political ideas in an all-out effort for the good of Canterbury. All sections—industrial, political, commercial, etc. —should all face the one way, learn how land, now occupied, can have its production greatly increased, how thousands of acres of swampy land can be brought to .profitable use, and the danger of flooding from rivers eliminated.— Yours, etc., 1 HIRAM HUNTER. June 15, 1954.
Sir, —I should like to congratulate Mr L. C. Walker on his two suggestions of building an overhead bridge from the Waimakariri and buying a Westminster dredge at a cost of £1,000,000 to dredge the shingle from the river to use in the construction of the railway, and also to bridge our estuary and improve our drainage. If Sir Joseph Ward, when he was Prime Minister, could give a dreadnought costing £1,000,000 to England, why cannot our present Prime Minister (Mr S. G. Holland) do likewise for his home town, Christchurch. This should be quite easy, as the Social Credit candidate for Lyttelton has clearly shown that banks do create credit by the ink pot: and the Reserve Bank can issue money free of interest. Mr Walker’s idea would not only make the Waimakariri safe from future flooding but also make safe many dangerous level crossings.—Yodrs. etc., S. W. HICKMOTT. June 15, 1954.
