ENDING OF RAIL SERVICE
PROTEST MEETING AT • NELSON REQUEST FOR CONTINUED OPERATION (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, June «. A crowd of 5000 gathered in a public demonstration in Nelson on Saturday against the closing down of the Nelson railway section. A special train from the country carried people wishing to attend the demonstration. At Nelson station the train was met by a cheering crowd and a band. The procession, led by banners, marched through the streets to the church steps. , One banner read "Bluff, here we come.”
Resolutions adopted by the meeting requested the continued full operation of the rail section and suggested the setting up of a local advisory committee to get more business for the railway. It was agreed that the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) should be asked to meet a deputation to discuss his recommendations to Cabinet, including the setting up of a commission of inquiry into Nelson’s rail link with the South Island system. The commission’s report would be accepted as final.
