N.Z. TEAM FOR BRITAIN

GOLF

PLAYERS TO BEGIN TOUR TODAY PLAY IN COMMONWEALTH TOURNAMENT (New Zealand. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 3. Six New Zealand amateur golfers and a manager will leave Auckland by airliner tomorrow to compete in the Com-, monwealth tournament at the Royal and Ancient Club of St, Andrews next month. The tour will cost between £4500 and £5OOO, and include a fleeting visit to the United States, with a day and a game in Honolulu and a day in New York. There' will be a tour of English and Scottish courses before the tournament with Britain, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. The members of the team are D. R. Richmond, of Wellington (manager); A. Gibbs, of Dunedin (playing captain);. D. L. Woon, of Hamilton, the amateur champion of New Zealand; B. M. Silk, of Wanganui, a past amateur champion; T. Jeffery, of New Plymouth; S. G. Jones, of Hastings; and A. R. Timms, of Dunedin. They will be free to return to New Zealand in their own time when the tour is complete. All will compete in the British open championship early in July, and will then go their various ways. Woon will return via the United States, and will compete in the Tam o’ Shanter, All-American, and “world” championships in August. “This is the first visit to Britain by a New Zealand men’s team,” said Mr Richmond this evening. “As such, it is a great adventure. We who are making it are conscious of the honour of selection. We are also deeply grateful- to the members of all Ne.w Zealand golf clubs who at fairly short notice made contributions to enable the tour to tike place. We are most anxious to repay their gesture by making as good a showing as we possibly can. I do not promise that we shall always win—perhaps too much is made of winning in modern sport—but I am sure I can promise that every man will try his hardest to be worthy of the tour.” The tournament is to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the Royal and Ancient Club.
