FREYBERG BOWL TOURNAMENT

CANTERBURY TEAM CHOSEN The Canterbury team to play in the inter-provincial golf tournament for the Freyberg Rose Bowl at Palmerston North on May 20, 21, and 22 will be:— R*. E. The Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast team of six to play in the Freyberg Rose Bowl inter-provincial golf competition on the Hokowhitu course, Palmerston North, on May 20, 21, and 22, will be: J. K. H. Smith (Marlborough). L. J. Domigan (West Coast), D. J. Day (Nelson), R. Donaldson (West Coast), N. Hoar (Nelson), A. Cresswell (Marlborough).

RUSSELL GRACE CUP

CQMPETITION TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK The annual elimination competition among four South Island teams for the Russell Grace Cup final will be played at the Shirley golf course next week. The cup, which was given by Mrs Young, of Wanganui, in memory of her mother, Mrs Russell Grace, is awarded annually to the winning team in New Zealand. The North and South Islands are each divided into four provinces, and a team representative of each province plays teams from the qther three provinces. The winning team in each island plays the final match during the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf Union’s annual championship tournament, which this year will be held at Miramar. , The cup was first played for at the Otatara course, Invercargill, in ‘1949, and was won by the Auckland team. At Hastings the next year, Wellington won the cup and in 1951 lost it to Canterbury at Dunedin. Canterbury retained the trophy at Auckland in 1952, and again in Wanganui in 1953. Members of the Canterbury team to play next week are:—Mrs R. G. Edward, Miss V. Fleming. Miss L. Hillis, Miss Z. Hudson, Miss Betty Murray, Mrs G. E. Sinclair, and Mrs L. A. Watson. Miss L. Dalzell will be /the reserve. On Monday, Canterbury will play West Coast-Nelson-Marlborough, ana OtagoSouthland will play South CanterburyNorth Otago.* On Tuesday Canterbury will play South Canterbury-North Otago, and West Coast-Nelson-Marlborough will play Otago-Southland. On Wednesday Canterbury will play Otago-Southland, and West Coast-Nelson-Marlborough will play South Canterbury-North Canterbury.
