ARMY CLASH WITH McCARTHY

Senator’s Plans At Inquiry

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON,. March 23. Senator Joseph McCarthy today resisted Republican efforts to put him on the sidelines without the right to cross-examine witnesses at the forthcoming investigation of his explosive dispute with Army officials. Senator McCarthy insisted on his right to cross-examine, but said he would refrain from any voting in connexion with the investigation, which will be conducted by the Senate Investigations Sub-Committee, while he steps down from the chairmanship. Senator Charles Potter, a member of the sub-committee, commented: “If Senator McCarthy insists on his right of cross-examination, there is no way in the world to stop him unless the whole matter were taken to the Rules Committee and then to the Senate it- ” The Army-McCarthy dispute broke out when the Army Secretary (Mr Robert Stevens) accused Senator McCarthy of browbeating and humiliating high Army officers with his investigating tactics.
