ATOM RESEARCH IN BRITAIN
BIG PROGRAMME OF EXPENDITURE (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 23. Britain will step up her expenditure on atomic energy projects m the financial year beginning next month, it was officially announced today. Government estimates published today, dealing largely with the civil side of nuclear development alone, total £53.675.000 for 1954-55 —an increase of £7.190,000 over the current year. These do not include the much larger—but secret —spending of the armed forces on atomic weapons of various kinds.
The forces receive their weapons from the Ministry of Supply, whose estimates are also up. The total is £l9B.ooo.ooo—an increase of £3,223,930 —and the biggest item is £140,210,000 for “research and development.” This phrase cloaks, among other activities, the Ministry’s work on atomic weapons and guided missiles.
