Fight Stopped In Sixth Round.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 24. Barry Brown, the New Zealand holder of the British Empire welter-weight title, was soundly rieaten by the American negro, rreddie Dawson, at the Sydney Sports Ground tonight. Dawson knocked Brown down repeatedly in the fifth round, and the fight ended in the sixth round, with the referee awarding the fight to Dawson. Brown, aged 22, was clearly outclassed, but he gave a plucky display in carrying on after the fifth round. Dawson, eighth ranking welterweight in the world, was too experienced and too powerful for the young Za5 w Zealander. But Brown was cheered by the huge crowd for his courageous display. As Brown rose each time after being battered to the canvas m round five, the crowd roared f °r referee to stop the fight.. -in the early rounds, Brown surprised by walking up to Dawson. He connected with several right-hand punches, isariy in the second round Brown staggered Dawson when he caught him flush on the jaw with a hard left cross. But from this point onwards, Dawson, Ci U J” and fast-moving, was in control of the fight. This was Brown’s first defeat in 15 professional bouts and his first fight since he won the British Empire title from the South African, Gerald Dreyer, in Wellington in January. Dawson, a veteran of nearly 250 con-tests.-has won all his Australian bouts by knockouts. Brown was the aggressor in the early rounds, and in the second he rocked Dawson with a left to the jaw. But at the end of the round, Dawson worried Brown with a hard right to the side of the head. Brown, at this stage, was throwing in fast right jabs to the body, attempting to bring his left into Play.
In the third round, Dawson hit Brown with some hard rights, and the New Zealander appeared to be losing ground. He was in serious trouble against the ropes at the end of the round.
Dawson won points with rights to the body in the fourth round and then almost put Brown down with a right to lhe chin. Dawson clearly was superior, and he anticipated most of Brown’s punches. z Brown was knocked down four times in the next round under a barrage of punches. A left to the jaw put him down for eight, and then another punch left him helpless on the canvas. He got up at nine, Dawson hit him with two lefts, and he went down again for eight. At the end of the round he was just getting up after another knockdown.
Dawson, in the sixth round, was clearly standing by waiting his chance ■to finish the fight. He hit Brown on the jaw and put him down for a count of eight. Another blow to the jaw knocked Brown down into the ropes, and the referee, Art Mawson, stopped the fight.
