WIN BY DOGGER BANK FILLY SUCCESS FOR MCCARTEN STABLE (From the Australian Correspondent of “The Press’’) m t , SYDNEY. March 22. The partnership between the New Zealand owner, Mr M. J. Moodabe, and Maurice McCarten, the Randwick trainer, achieved further success on Saturday when. Sweet Adeline won the fillies’ division of the two-year-old race at Canterbury Park. Mr Moodabe met McCarten in New Zealand when he was a jockey. When McCarten set up as a trainer, Mr Moodabe sent him a horse to be prepared. Sweet Adeline’ is the .tenth horse which Mr Moodabe. has sent to McCarten. and she is the tenth winner. Moreover she looks like adding to the partnerships long list of wins, because she shows good promise of developing i into a stayer.. Sweet Adeline is a massive filly by Dogger Bank from Lady Adornment. She has been at Randwick since the beginning of the seasop. She is likely to develop into a first-class galloper. Because of Sweet Adeline’s size. McCarten has not hurried her in her training. Apparently she still has a way to go before she is considered at her peak form, because she started at 10 to 1 on Saturday. A horse from McCarten’s stables seldom starts at that prtce if the trainer really fancies its prospects. Strong Finish Sweet Adeline was allowed plenty of time in which to settle down in Saturday’s race. The fact that she -was not anywhere near the lead till the final stages deceived those who had backed the strongly fancied candidates, Alleviate and Karen, which were prominent for most of the way. Karen was racing for the first time after a spell. In the spring, she was considered one of the best prospects among the fillies. Therefore when Karen ran to the front entering the last furlong of Saturday’s race, she appeared, set for a comfortable win. Sweet Adeline then made a burst. She reached Karen without difficulty, ran past her. and beat her by a length and a half. Though the McCarten stable did not greatly fancy Sweet Adeline, there was strong support for another New Zealand horse, Peter Willonyx, which was engaged in the Welter Handicap. It was again a contest between two Sowerful stables. Karen is trained by T. . Smith, who also produced the favourlie. Sky Hawk, lor,the Welter Handicap. This tune, fortune was with Smith. Sky Hawk led all the way, and beat Peter Willonyx by a length and a half. Peter Willonyx was very Impressive In track trials when he was first brought to Sydney. Racing enthusiasts wondered why he was not entered for the major sprints. • The gelding has had two starts now, and although he shows an abundance of pace, he has not been good enough in the last furlong to cope with the Weights Sydney handicappers give him. Regoll Beaten Regofti was beaten in the Flying Handicap on Saturday by Karendi, a fancied candidate for the Doncaster Handicap. Karendi is a stablemate of the Doncaster Handicap favourite Silver Phantom, and is a worthy second string. But the interest in the race was ill Caiioca, which was third. Carioca now has thrown the betting market on the Doncaster-Sydney ’Cup double into a dither. Carioca was having his first run after a spell, and was one of the comparative outsiders in the field. He surprised by being well up almost from the start, and turning into the straight only about four lengths behind Karendi and Regoli, which had followed the pacemaker. True Leader, to the turn. Then Carioca made a great run in the straight. If the race had been 50 yards longer, he probably would have won The race was run at a fast pace all the'way, the time being only a quarter of a second slower than the track record for six furlongs—lmin llisec—which has stood since it was established by the New Zealand horse. Beaulivre, in 1940. Carioca’s surprising sprint form raises the question of whether his owner-trainer. P. Hoysted, will change his plans and prepare him for the Doncaster instead of for the Sydney Cup. Bookmakers say he would be favourite for the Doncaster if Hoysted announced such a plan. As it is, they have placed Carioca on the top line for the Sydney Cup, demoting Lancaster to the second line, with another New Zealand stayer. Gold Scheme.
