AUSTRALASIAN GOLD CUP TOURNEY

CONCERN AT CONDITION OF N.Z. PONIES

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 24. The condition of the New Zealand polo ponies brought over for the Australasian Gold Cup tournament has the New Zealand team worried. The captain,. Roy Douglas, said at least three of the 18 ponies were tucked up in their action. The sea trip did not seerfi to affect them, but they were not used to confined quarters for such a long period, he said. Douglas added that perhaps the feed was upsetting them also. The’ biggest polo tournament in Melbourne for 20 years will open at Flemington tomorrow. Eight teams from New Zealand, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria will compete for the Australasian Gold Cup—the blue riband of polo. New Zealand, believed to be equal to some of the best combinations in the world, is favoured for the title. The New Zealand ponies have impressed judges. Generally they show more quality than the Australian mounts, which in the main have a background of stock horse blood.
