PENALTIES FOR CORRUPTION
TROTTING RACE AT ORARI
WINNER DISQUALIFIED, FINES IMPOSED
Superior Globe, winner of the Waihi Handicap No. 1 at the Geraldine Trotting Club’s meeting at Orari on February 27, has been disqualified for the race. His owner, C. N. Radford, of Belfast, and J. G. Hampton, a professional trainer, of Belfast, who at the time was stated to be the trainer of the horse, have each been fined £5O. Royal Crown has now been declared the winner of the race. Action was taken yesterday at a meeting of the stipendiary stewards — Messrs F. J. Beer (chairman), L. A. Butterfield, and J. H. Lang. The stewards had been directed by the emergency committee of the New. Zealand Trotting Conference to inquire into the training of Superior Globe, owned by Radford, and stated to be trained by Hampton. An objection was lodged under Rules 329 and 330 of the Rules of Trotting to the first position in the Waihi Handicap No. 1 being awarded to Superior Globe on the ground that the horse had not been trained by a licensed trainer for one month before entries closed for the race, as required und£r Rule 222.
Radford was charged that on February 11 he committed a corrupt practice under Rule 345 (j) by wilfully and corruptly supplying false information to the secretary of the Geraldine Trotting Club, by stating in the entry of Superior Globe that the horse was trained by Hampton. Hampton was charged fhat on or about February 11 he committed a corrupt practice under Rule 345 (w) by aiding and abetting Radford in the commission of a corrupt practice by consenting to his name being given by Radford as the trainer of Superior Globe in the entry of the horse for the Geraldine meeting. It was decided that Superior Globe be disqualified for the race and that Royal Crown be placed first, Nipalong second, and Zola third. Radford was fined £5O for supplying false information and Hampton was fined the same amount for ailing and abetting Radford. Royal Crown, an acceptor for the Highbank Handicap at Methven on Saturday, has now been rehandicapped to 48 yards as a result of being awarded the Geraldine race. . Superior Globe, a five-year-old gelding by Super Globe from Finery, was making his first appearance at a totalisator meeting when, driven by D. J. Townley, he won the Waihi Handicap No. 1 at Geraldine by a nose frorri Royal Crown.' He was a 7, 9 favourite for the race, and paid £l5 Ils for a win and £5 for a place.
