FIRE DAMAGES D.S.I.R. LABORATORIES

EMPLOYEE BURNED ON ARM (New Zealand Press Association) • WELLINGTON, March 19. Fire gutted the interior of two laboratories in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research buildings in Sydney street at 11.16 a.m. yesterday. It is thought that the cost of repairs and replacement- of instruments will exceed £lOOO. An employee of the department, Mr H. Williamson, had a, narrow escape from serious injury. While carrying out an experiment he accidentally spilled some solvent into a hot plate. There was an immediate explosion and the laboratory burst into flames. Mr Williamson escaped with slight injuries to the arm.
