FINE RESPONSE TO CLOTHING DRIVE
SORTING AND PACKING BEGUN
The clothing drive for distressed persons in Greece, held by the Christchurch branch of the Council of Organisations for Relief Services Overseas (CORSO) and the Canterbury Junior Chamber of Commerce on Saturday met with such an excellent response that it will take about three weeks to sort and pack the goods, according to the South Island representative for CORSO (Mr R. Thurlow Thompson).
“It was a first-class collection and quite up to the standard of any drive I have experienced in Wellington.” Mr Thompson said. Because of the rain on Saturday sorters are keeping a look-out for any garment that may have become damp. These will be thoroughly dried before being packed.
Mr Thompson said he thought that the clothing would be sufficient to outfit about 5000 persons in Greece and its total value would be worth approximately £20,000 to them. Some 60 voluntary helpers began working to a system of sorting and packing yesterday. About 50 helpers would be needed to work in the mornings and 50 in the afternoons each day to complete the task in three weeks, Mr Thompson said. Mr V. Rendle, assistant organiser of the appeal, is in charge of the depot at the corner of Tuam and Montreal streets, where the sorting and packing are being done.
