IMPERIALISM
Sir, —I was ashamed to see New Zealand lined up behind Great Britain and the United States voting against the granting of democratic institutions to Morocco. Ever since the Fashoda incident in 1898, the practice of France has been to let Britain do what she wants in Egypt for the privilege of Britain allowing her to do what she wants in West Africa. It is in this way that these two imperialist States help one another at the cost of their victims. But why should New Zealand support this Western imperialist policy? Should she not rather try to give the Western nations a lead? Let her disarm and devote her “defence budget” to raising the economic level of poorer world communities. World peace without world economic equality is unthinkable, and imperialism, the domination and exploitation of weaker people by superior military power, is the biggest enemy of such equality.— Yours, etc., N. M. BELL. November 6, 1953.
