CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS SERVICE

Sir, —Thanks to the Dean of Christchurch for his comment on my letter; and may I have a further word? Where the service consists merely of a talk by one person with a few hymn records scattered in just to break it up a bit (the usual way), 30 minutes is certainly long enough—often far too long, in my opinion. But have the children present in person, teach them to sing with feeling and understanding, and the demand might easily soon be rather for an extension. Nowadays we have far too much listening to others and far too little thinking and acting for ourselves. Get the people (both children and adults) frequently together and let them sing as they certainly would under capable leadership. I suggest that no other power on earth would tend so effectively to bring all together in heart and mind —surely the most desperate need of today.—Yours, etc., GEORGE INGRAM. November 6, 1953.
