WORLD AIR SPEED RECORD

NEW ATTEMPT BY BRITISH JET LONDON, September 16. A British Supermarine Swift jet fighter will make an attempt on th* world air speed record next week, on a course near Cartel Idris—formerly known as Castel Benito—in Libya, th* makers. Vicken-Armstrongs, announced in London tonight. It will be piloted by Lieutenant Commander ’‘Mike” Lithgow, the Vickers Supermarine test pilot. The Swift fitted with th* latest Rolls-Royce Avon jet engine, will have to travel at 732.8 miles an hour to beat by 1 per cent the present British-held record set up earlier this month by Squadron Leader Neville Duke.
