CHALLENGE TO SHIPS PREDICTED

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, June 22. A forecast that the day was approaching when air transport would challenge shipping in its influence on the development of world trade was made by Mr Philip Bremridge. representing the International Federation oi Independent Air Transport, when he addressed the general assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Mr Bremridge said that in some directions British independent air charter firms had increased their business by more than 100 per cent, in the second half of last year, compared with the corresponding period of 1951. Between the two comparable periods the number of ton-miles sold by British charter firms had increased by 115 per cent., and the number of passenger miles had increased by 89 per cent., he said. Freight ton-miles were 70 per cent, higher. The all-up weight of aircraft fleets owned bv British independent charter firms was now 5.000.0001b —67 per cent, more than in last June, Mr Bremridge said. .
