NEW YORK, June 22. Summer came officially to New York yesterday and brought a' heat record. As the temperature climbed to 93.7 degrees, freak thunderstorms leap-frogged over the city. Three persons were killed by lightning, and heat-wave temperatures in the 90’s and 100’s all.over the United States were blamed for 12 deaths at' the weekend. . Fifty-nine persons were drowned. Wichita, Kansas, was battered by one of the worst storms in its history. Gusts of 90 and 100 miles an hour flattened buildings and ripped out power lines, leaving a large part of the city without electricity. About four inches of rain fell during the 30-minute storm and residents reported hailstones the size of tennis
Damage was very heavy, but there were no casualties. Yesterday, Gila Bend, Arizona, topped the United States record with a temperature of 112 degrees.
