RUGBY FOOTBALL

DATE OF WELLINGTON MATCH

JULY 4 CONSIDERED NOT SUITABLE

July 4 was considered by the Wellington Rugby Union to be the most suitable date for its team to play Canterbury, at Christchurch, said a letter from the Wellington union, read at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The letter said that as there was an international Rugby League game in Wellington on that day, it was preferable to have the team, playing elsewhere. July 11. the alternative date suggested at a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, was unsuitable, because on that day the first matches in the second round of the Jubilee Cup were to be played. It would be unfair to some senior teams to have their star players away for such important matches, said the letter. Reporting for the competitions committee, Mr R. W. Blazey said that the game between Town and Country had been set down for June 27. On that day there would be a League test in Christchurch. The Town and Country game could not be put back but must go forward.

"As we have two big secondary school games on .July 4, we should approach the Wellington , union again and they might help us out,” said Mr Blazey. “Our difficulties are as great as theirs.”

Mr Blazey suggested that the Town and Country match be played on July -4 or July 18. It would be more suitable for Country to play on July 11 or July 18, said Mr C. W. McKeegan. It was decided to write to the Wellington union suggestion that July 4 was not a suitable day to play the WellingtonCanterbury match 'at Christchurch. Middlesex Cap The Middlesex Cup for New Zealand senior seven-a-side teams .would be played in Timaru on Monday, June 1, said a letter from the South Canterbury Rugby Union. Entries from as many Canterbury clubs as possible would be welcomed, said the letter.

The Christchurch City Council wrote that it would consider the erection of dressing-sheds at North and South Hagley Parks. The Rugby Union would be asked to contribute to the cost of building these. The matter was referred by the union to its finance committee.

ALL BLACK TEAM

SELECTORS TO SEE MOST REPRESENTATIVE GAMES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 12. The selectors of the All Black team to tour Britain and France next season would see practically every representative match before the trials- began in August, said Mr T. C. Morrison convener, of the All Black selection committee, today. Every player would have an opportunity to prove his worth, he said. In addition, North and South Island selectors would be consulted about representative fixtures, said Mr Morrison.

With such a heavy representative programme and jiine trials, including . the North-South match, the seelctorts • would have .to spend some time in travellint before their final choice was announced.
