ASSAULT ON HIGH SEAS
PRISON SENTENCES REDUCED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 10.
Arthur Ravenscroft, aged 25, and Thomas Slade, aged 20, both ship’s stewards, who had each been sentenced by Mr J. S. Hanna, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court on April 23 to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour for asault on the high seas, had their sentences reduced by Mr Justice Gresson in the Supreme Court on Friday ot three months’ imprisonment. Mr N. Taylor, for the prisoners, said the assault had taken place soon after their ship had left Wellington, and the law prescribed in some cases a smaller penalty when the ship was not far out at sea. The men had been drinking, said counsel, and the Magistrate’s Court hearing had been hurried because the principal witnesses for .the Crown were ship’s officers, and the ship was waiting to sail again. The prisoners had not then been represented by counsel. The maximum sentence had been inflicted. His Honour said the maximum sentence in England for a similar offence was 12 weeks’ imprisonment. Mr W. H. Cunningham appeared for ' the Crown.
