LAWN TENNIS INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT
ROSEWALL’S WIN OVER PATTY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ROME, May 9. The 18-year-old Australian, Ken Rosewall, had a good win in the international tennis tournament today when he beat the American, Budge Patty, In straight sets in the quarter-final of the men’s singles. Rosewall scored with beautiful backhand crosscourt drives. Results were:— Singles (quarter-finals).—Rosewall beat Patty, 8-6. 6-3, 6-2; Drobny beat Bernard Bartzen, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1; Gardini beat Bergelin, 6-3, 8-6, 6-3; Hoad was leading Davidson. 7-5, 5-5, when bad light stopped play. Womens Singles.—Semi-finals: Maureen Connolly beat Dorothy Head-Knode, 6-1, 6-4; Doris Hart beat Shirley Fry, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Men’s Doubles.—Quarter-finals: Ayre and Hartwig beat Seixas and Morea, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0. Women’s Doubles.—Semi-finals: Misses Connolly and Sampson beat Mesdames Head-Knode and Hopman, 6-2, 7-5; Misses Hart and Fry beat Mesdames Adamson and Lazzarino, 6-3, 9-7.
