CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

LOVELOCK MEMORIAL RELAY RACE CANTERBURY COLLEGE WINS AT DUNEDIN The two visiting Christchurch clubs, Canterbury University College and Marist, proved too strong for Dunedin clubs when the Lovelock memorial relay race was decided at Dunedin on Saturday. Canterbury University College had its fourth successive win, beating Marist by 50 yards in 26min Isec, with Caversham, the first Dunedin club, another 50 yards back. The time, although 16sec outside last year's record, was excellent on a holding track. The race was run over six stages of 1500 metres. P. Sidon (Caversham), J. Daly (Marist), P. May and J. Parcell (both University) shared the fastest time of 4min 4sec. P. Sidon (Caversham) was an early leader in the first lap, with P. Bennett (Canterbury University College) finishing fourth, and D. Kellegher (Marist) sixth. Parcell (Canterbury University College), the New Zealand mile champion, quicklygathered in the leaders to give B. Tucker a 100-yard start on Marist and Caversham. An excellent fourth lap by J. Kyle took Marist into the lead, 3sec clear of Caversham, with Canterbury University College 20 yards back. M. R. Craighead (Canteroury University College) caught the leaders to send May off level with Caversham and 9sec clar of Daly (Marist). Daly soon moved into second place, but May, running strongly, held his advantage. Results:— . -
