GOVERNOR OF AUSTRALIA

SIR WILLIAM SLIM SWORN IN (Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 8. Field-Marshal Sir William Slim became Australia’s thirteenth GovernorGeneral and Commander-in-Chief at a colourful swearing-in ceremony in the Federal Parliament House today. The ceremony had to be delayed for 45 minutes because of the late arrival in Canberra of the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies). The airliner in which Mr Menzies flew from Brisbane to Sydney was held up by bad weather. He flew on to Canberra in a special Royal Australian Air Force Dakota, but could not make up the lost time. The Governor-General’s standard was lowered at Admiralty House, Sydney. where the former Governor-Gen-eral (Sir William McKell) has been living, and broken at Yarralumba. Sir William Slim’s house, outside Canberra.
