OWL DOWN THE CHIMNEY

Sir, —In “The Press” of Friday you printed the photograph of an owl which had come down a chimney of a two-storeyed house belonging to Mrs L. Hack, of Sydenham, bringing with it a shower of soot. Strange to say, an owl—the small German species —repeated the manoeuvre down my chimney last night, or early this morning. Awakened during the night by an unusual noise somewhere in the house, I investigated, but it wasn’t till daylight that a shower of soot in the grate and on the carpet of the draw-ing-room caused an investigation resulting in the appearance of the owl covered in -soot, but none the worse for its escapade. It was caught and liberated. It had made a first-class job of cleaning my chimney.—Yours, etc., R. T. STREET. March 10, 1953.
