SIGN OF THE KIWI
Sir, —About a year ago, when there was much hoo-ha about the restoration of the Sign of the Kiwi, I pointed out that some of those loudest in their demands for the City Council to spend more money on the building were not residents of the city. I also suggested that as the City Council had already served the metropolitan area magnificently by providing and maintaining reserves both inside and outside the city boundaries, the additional money fo rthe Sign of the Kiwi should be raised in the outside areas. With great interest, therefore, I noted in your recent report that the contributions to the appeal fund from the Riccarton Borough Council and the Heathcote and Waimairi County Councils amount to the good round sum of—nothing. The appeal committee is still “in touch.” But ho touch yet.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. March 9, 1953.
