CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
ANNUAL COMPETITIONS The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s annual competitions were concluded in the Caledonian Hall yesterday. The senior championship for the highest aggregate points in the four open Highland dancing events was won by Margaret Smith, with 343 points. Isobel Russell, with 341 points, was second, and Marlene Smith (320 points) was third. The intermediate championship was won by Janice Barnard with 314 points. Vernon Norris was second with 306 points, and Beverley Davie was third with 260 points. The junior championship was won by Barbara Dick (317 points), with Jill Fagan (316 points) second, and Judith Dench (315 points) third. Janice Newell, with 303 points, won the challenge cup for competitors under 12 years. Valerie Veitch (293 points), was second, and Maureen Reddington, with 289 points, was third. Nancy Rodgers won the trophy for the best dressed dancer. Results:— Gillie Callum (Open, and under 17 years).—Margaret Smith 1, Isobel Russell 2, Barbara Dick 3. Jill Fagan v h c, Nancy Rodger, Ann McGettigan, Colleen Fergus, Judith Dench, and Pauline Entwhistle h c. Slow March (Open).—A. Thompson 1, T. R. Young 2, lan Smith 3. Scottish Song (under 12 years).—Faye Ellis 1, Dianne Whitworth 2.
Scottish Song (12 and under 15 years).— Gary Fraser 1. Judith Dench 2, Beverley Mackrell and Carel Chapman (equal) 3, Scottish Song (15 years and over).— Fay Dixon 1, Joyce Sunbeam 2, George Campbell 3. Irish Jig (Open).—Margaret Smith 1, Isobel Russell 2, Judith Dench 3.
