OBITUARY

MR J. E. DONOVAN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 22. One of Auckland’s best-known boxing trainers, Mr James Eugene Donovan, died yesterday, aged 76. Mr Donovan was a well-performed amateur boxer in his early days, and was also prominent as a Rugby referee during the 1914-18 war. He started training in 1921 with his brother, Mr H. Donovan, and later trained on his own account. He retired from training this year. Among Mr Donovan’s many awards are the Kohn Shield, which he won 14 times. This is awarded each year to the trainer with the most winners in the Auckland championships. Hs also trained seven New Zealand champions and two winners of New Zealand’s boxing blue riband, the Jamison Belt.
