INVERCARGILL WOOL SALE

6D PER LB RISE ON SEPTEMBER PRICES

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, December 16. Prices paid by a full bench of buyers at the InvercargiH wool sale on Saturday were firm on those realised in Timaru. Over the whole offering of 28,433 bales the average price per lb was probably at least 6d up on the prices at the September sales in Invercargill. Well grown wool, showing good length, brought good prices. Bidding was only occasionally animated, for hogget wools mainly, when the local mills competed. The quality of this specialty wool, for which Southland has a good name, was good in spite of the bad season. The bad weather showed its effects In the ewe wools which were generally uneven in length. The cheque will probably total up to £2,000,000. The average price per lb is estimated at 47d or 48d, compared with 41d at the last sale. Top price was 76d, paid for a binned lot of five bales of super Southdown. Nearly all the wool offered was cleared.

Official Report The official report of the Invercargill Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Wool Commission and the Woolbuyers’ Association, reads: “The first main sale of the new Southland selling season was held at the Civic Theatre before a full and representative bench of buyers. The hogget wool opened up in surprisingly good condition considering the bad season, but a great deal of the ewe wool showed the effects of the severe winter and was uneven in length. There was a percentage of tender wool. Necks, pieces, and bellies were representative of this centre and there were few crutchings. Most of the consuming countries were represented, but the keenest competition was from me Continent and Bradford. Prices were firm on the Timaru sale.” The official range of prices is:— d. cl
