FIJIAN FORCE FOR MALAYA
19 NEW ZEALANDERS INCLUDED (Neu> Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 14. Nineteen New Zealanders will serve with the infantry battalion which Fiji will send to Malaya next month. This was announced by the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald)' to-day. The Minister said that, in addition to four regular officers and three regu. lar other ranks, five officers and seven other ranks had been selected from New Zealanders who had volunteered for service with the battalion. The volunteers are:— Captain W. K. King (Auckland), who had war service with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Captain H. M. McDonald (Gisborne), who served with the Maori Battalion. Captain D. J. Stellin, M.C. (Welling, ton), who served with British Commando units. Lieutenant G. A. Hyde (Nelson), who served with General Wingate’s force in Burma. Lieutenant I. J. Thomson (Raglan), who served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and J Foree. Staff-Sergeant K. E. Culver (Weilington), who served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F, and J Force. Sergeant S. A. Gilhooly (Hawera), who served with J Force. Corporal C. W. Anstiss (Whakatane), who served with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Corporal G. R/J. Gill (Rotorua), who served with the British Army In Europe. Private J. R. Casey (Auckland), who served with J Force. Private E. C. Hunwick ,(Te Awamutu>. who served with J Force. Private W. S. Hutchinson (Auckland), who served in Burma with the Ist Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. The regular officers and other ranks are now in Fiji. AU the volunteers except two will sail from Auckland in the Matua next Tuesday. Lieutenants Hyde and Thomson will go to Fiji by air later. GENERAL STEWART TO VISIT FIJI INSPECTION OF ARMED FORCES Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 14. The Chief of the New Zealand General Staff (Major-General K. L. Stewart) will leave Auckland by air for a short visit to Fiji next Tuesday. The purpose of General Stewart’s visit will be to inspect the battalion which Fiji will send to Malaya next month. He will also inspect other units of the Fiji military forces and military installations in Fiji, He will return to New Zealand by air on December 23.
