BATTLE EXERCISES BY ALLIES
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 15, Thousands of British and Allied troops were thrown into Western Europe’s biggest mock battle to-day to test Allied defence against a sudden wide-front invasion from “Redland.' Under British Army direction fighting units from seven North Atlantic Treaty nations went into action at dawn for a 10-dav exercise over 15,000 square miles of undulating farmland in the North-western German plains between Bremen and Hanover. “Redland” forces, -under MajorGeneral Basil Coad, attacked at first light to-day. and moved south across an imaginary front line between Bremen and Hamburg. Within a few hours French troops Of “Redland" had seised a road railway bridge across the river Aller at Verden. 20 miles south-east of Bremen. British armoured divisions of the “Blueland” defence forces, under Major-General Dudley Ward, rushed north to hold the nush. Allied let fighters swept over the battle areas. Both sides exchanged simulated heavy bomber attacks on Bremen and Hanover. Combat team commanders on both sides know nothing of the general plan of the exercises, and are free to improvise their tactics as the battle develops.
