TRADE WITHIN GERMANY

Conflict Between East And West

(Rec. 8.40 p.m.) BERLIN, Sept, 11. East and West German trade negotiators met yesterdav for the first time for 10 days to continue their renewed effort to re-establish trade relations. They will meet again to-day. The talks were resumed yesterday in spite of continuing Soviet-backed East German restrictions on trade and traffic from West Berlin. The talks were suspended 11 days ago when the East German authorities imposed a road tax on West German and West Berlin vehicles using the 100-mile road linking Berlin with the West. The talks are aimed at finding some reasonable compromise in order to put into operation the £84,000,000 EasiWest inter-2onal trade pact initialled in July, but not yet formally signed, because of Allied objections to the East German road and rail restrictions. The East German authorities to-day continued their efforts to meet any possible Western counter measures. East German workers are working night and day to complete a canal bypassing the western sectors of Berlin. At present all East German waterway pass through the West Berlin canal locks, all of which are under British control. tn addition the Fast German railway authorities are rushing the completion of an extended rail rin” around the city to prevent any East German goods from touching West Berlin.
