Control May Be Relaxed

(Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 10. A Senate committee to-aay decided to hold a short hearing on a bill to repeal legislation banning imports of foreign dairy produce if thev interfered with the United States domestic market. New Zealand was one of tlfe countries which lodged formfit protests against the ban, After a closed session of the Senate Banking and Currency Committee, the chairman. Senator Burnet Maybank (Democrat. South Carolina), said the committee had agreed to have a twoday hearing, but that no date had been Senator Maybank had Introduced a bill which would kill an earlier amendment to the Defence Production Act affecting dairy imports. This amendment would oblige the Secretary of Agriculture, if ne found that imports would affect domestic production and marketing, to place import controls on fats and oils (Including oilbearing materials, fatty acids, soap and soap powder, but excluding petroleum products, coconuts ana coconut products), peanuts, butter, cheese, and all other dairy products, as well as rice and rice, products. Government officials predicted that under the amendments restrictions Denmark could lose nearly 2,000.000 dol’are a ve»r in foreign exchange and the Ne*herlands about 1.000.000 dollars.
