INCREASE IN RATES

Sir,—l should like through your paper to protest very strongly at the large increase in my rates. Last year an extra £5 was added; this year, another £4. These increases are on a 50-year-old house. It was valued last year at £l7OO, but it is the first time I was aware that property increased in value by age. Four years ago my rates were £l9 10s; to-day they are £3l 5s 3d. Why? Either the councillors have no vision beyond rate increases when money is needed for special works, or they think all ratepayers are wealthy people. For further extra money needed for improvements, I suggest the council get a mandate to tax every citizen from 21 years ss, and impose .a tax of 5s yearly on cyclists from the same age.—Yours, etc., * ALL SHOULD PAY. September 3. 1951.
