“CHIMPANZEEISM”

Sir—ln appreciation of the chimpanzee photograph in this morning’s issue, I would suggest it could be attractive to some readers, but quite offensive to others. Personally, I am a great lover of animals, especially of the human variety, but I am unacquainted with the human rights of monkeys. If they claim to be front-seaters and their claims are to be upheld, surely there is yet hope for a higher status for the world’s coloured races, who are human too. and who would, we suppose, claim higher rights than monkeys,- since they walk on two feet instead of four, and with heads uplifted to heaven in honour of the God who made them.— Yours, etc., KATHLEEN HILL. Belfast. September 1, 1851.
