UMPIRES’ DECISIONS VIEWS OF ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT An appeal to members of the team not to question an umpire’s decision had been made by hint to members of the Canterbury team at the beginning of the season, ahd he was pleased to Have noted that the appeal had been successful, said the president of the Canterbury Cricket Association (Mr V. Some playcrk who had .been ound in 1948 had for some reason suffered a lack of fo.m, and new and younger players had been included in the team. In spite of the change of. captain after the first match, the team had beaten Wellington and had nearly beiiteri Au,island. A. R. MacGibbdit had done a grand job as captain, and T. B. Burtt as vicecertain, after J. G. Letfgat had suffered an injury. Leggat's loss as a top bats; man had been great, especially When he emed set for a good Plunket Shield I a on. ~ There had been weakness In the side, and one of them was Abiding in the sl.ps. It wrs necessary to get the players practising this A iding. He had sent to England for particulars of a slips machine, and it was h<»ed th»t-ttijk machine would be shipned soon. The ritps machine was better than the home*made' Ones, and had mo e life. There was a ve;j< real difference in the w*y cateh«s dniirt off. He hoped that '■•lryers would t«ke advantage of the machine. It would be .kept at lancaster Park, but would be available or all clubs. •
