MANY PRELATES TO

ATTEND Prelates from many dioceses in Australia and New Zealand, headed by the Cardinal Archbishop of Sydney (Cardinal Gilroy), as well as the Apostolic Delegate (Archbishop Marella) will attend the centenary celebrations of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cnristchurch, which open next Wednesday night. The programme extends over four days, and its various ceremonies are expected to be attended by many hundreds of visitors from outside Canterbury. The number of Archbishops, Bishops and Monsifnon to attend represents the biggest gathering of Prelates in the Church’s history iu New Zealand. The celebrations will open on Wednesday evening, when there will be 8 liturgical reception to Cardinal Gilroy in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. On Thursday next. Archbishop Duhig, of Brisbane, will be the preacher at Solemn Pontifical Mass in the cathedral, in the afternoon a Holy Hour for women will be held, and in the evening there is an official reception to visitors in the King Edward Barracks, at which the chairman will be Bishop Joyce. ... On Friday, November 17, there will be special thanksgiving masses in the morning at all parish churches in the diocese, and in the afternoon Cardinal. Gilroy will lay the foundation stonP of the Mary Potter Hospice of the Dying at Lewisham Hospital. In the evening there will be a public lecture in the Civic Theatre by Monsignor J. Carroll, of Sydney. . On Saturday morning there will be a Requiem Mass at the cathedral, with Archbishop McKeefry as the celebrant and Bishop Liston, of Auckland, as the preacher. A men’s luncheon in honour of Cardinal Gilroy will be held in the Wentworth, at which the speaker will be Archbishop Simonds, of Melbourne. Thousands of children from the diocesan schools take part in a display in the grounds of St. Bede’s College in the afternoon, in which historical pageants will be presented. In the evening there will be a men’s rally in the cathedral, at which Father P. O’Flanagan, S.J., a visitor from Dublin. will preach. On Sunday Cardinal Gilroy will be the celebrant of a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving in the cathedral. Bishop Joyce will be the preacher. In the afternoon it is expected that more than 10,000 will take part in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament from the grounds of St. Mary’s Church, in Manchester street, to the grounds of the cathedral. The singing of the “Te Deum” and Solemn Pontifical Benediction will close the celebrations. The Diocese of Christchurch takel in much of the West Coast, and many visitors from Greymouth and Hokitika are expected in Christchurch for the celebrations.
