CHILDREN AND SHIMMING

Sir,—ln "The Press" this morning you mentioned a report saying that more than half of the children in standard classes in Canterbury Education Board schools could not swim. This apparently includes Standards 1, 2 and 3, the children of which could hardly be expected to swim. Could you quote the proportion of swimmers in Standards 4, 5 and 6 as this would give a better picture. How much can be expected of the schools when the swimming season lasts only one school month, February?—Yours, etc. x, , 'J.C.W. November 9, 1950.
